Gift Ideas to Increase Your Child’s Outdoor Activities

Gift Ideas to Increase Your Child's Outdoor Activities

Have you noticed that your children are spending more and more time at home? Yes, our kids now prefer to stay at home as opposed to staying outside until it’s dark when we were kids.

They prefer to play TV games all day rather than go out for a bike ride. They prefer to talk to their friends on their cell phones rather than face-to-face with them. They don’t even want to go to the backyard.

You’ve tried everything you can to encourage them to go outside. But with little success.

Now I’d like to introduce you to one of my favorite activities – bird watching. I’ve managed to get a few neighborhood kids very interested in it.

Unlike other outdoor activities, there are few restrictions on bird watching. The kids can start it almost anytime, anywhere.

All they have to do is grab their binoculars and a bird book and they’re ready to go.

Sometimes it’s not even necessary to go outside, it can be done in the backyard or on the deck.

Raising young children to bird watch will have at least the following benefits.

  • Increasing children’s outdoor activity.
  • Calming their mood.
  • A connection with nature.
  • Helping children learn ecological, environmental, and biological sciences.

It is amazing the changes you will see in children once they become interested in bird watching.

  • More open to going outdoors
  • Become quieter.
  • Become concerned about environmental issues and ecological balance
  • Do things with more planning.

When you want to encourage your child to start birdwatching by giving a gift, you can start by addressing a few initial questions for newcomers.

1, Knowledge of birds

It is essential to have an initial understanding of birds, especially those near your home (they are the birds you see most often).

A book on birds would be a great gift for children who are ready to start birding.

Backyard Guide to the Birds of North America is a great introductory book.

This book introduces 150 of the most common and interesting bird species in North America. Many of them can be observed in the backyard.

Each time you observe a new bird, you can mark it in the book.

Or make a list of watched birds.

Tips.

2, Binoculars

To observe birds, a pair of binoculars is an essential tool.

Typically a 7×35 or 8×40 is sufficient for bird watching.

We recommend the Nikon 7237 Action 7×35 EX Extreme All-Terrain Binocular.

This is a porro prism telescope with 7x magnification that is great for short to medium range birding (e.g. birds on a bird feeder in the backyard, or on a roof or tree).

Its biggest advantage is the large field of view and the ability to cell phone more light than other scopes.

This results in a more vibrant and brighter field of view for this telescope under the same conditions.

It is very helpful for bird watching.

If you wish to get more magnification. There is also the Nikon 10×42 ProStaff 3S Binoculars available here.

If you need a more cost effective telescope, there is also a soccer 12×25 Compact Binoculars available here.

Although it claims to be 12x, it is actually only about 8x and has a slightly darker field of view than the Nikon.

His advantage is to mention small, easy to carry. And its price has a great advantage over the Nikon.

3, Bird feeder

If you want to start bird watching from the backyard, then setting up a bird feeder in the backyard is essential.

As the water and things in the bird feeder attract the birds, they often come back to eat.

This is the perfect time for bird watching. You can sit indoors next to a window or on your deck and watch this long-feathered friend through binoculars.

Once these birds have had their fill in your backyard, the odds are good that you’ll see them again at the same time the rest of the year.

Nature’s Hangout Clear Window Bird Feeder is transparent. So it’s even less likely to interfere with your bird watching .
